What are IP Tests?

IP (Ingress Protection) tests are tests to determine how protected electrical and electronic devices are against external factors. These tests measure the resistance of devices to environmental factors such as dust, solid objects and water. The IP rating system has been developed to improve the safety of products and protect users.

IP Rating System

The IP rating is expressed by a code consisting of two digits:

  • First Digit: Indicates the level of protection against solid objects (from 0 to 6).
  • Second Digit: Indicates the level of protection against water (between 0-9).

IP Protection Ratings

  1. Protection Against Solid Objects:
    • IP0X: No protection.
    • IP1X: Protection against objects larger than 50 mm.
    • IP2X: Protection against objects larger than 12.5 mm.
    • IP3X: Protection against objects larger than 2.5 mm.
    • IP4X: Protection against objects larger than 1 mm.
    • IP5X: Protection against dust (not completely dust-free, but protection against harmful effects).
    • IP6X: Dustproof.
  2. Protection against ingress of water:
    • IPX0: No protection.
    • IPX1: Protection against vertical drops.
    • IPX2: Protection against inclined drops up to 15 degrees.
    • IPX3: Protection against water spray.
    • IPX4: Protection against water splashes.
    • IPX5: Protection against water jets.
    • IPX6: Protection against strong water jets.
    • IPX7: Protection against short-term immersion in water (usually at a depth of 1 metre).
    • IPX8: Protection against continuous immersion in water (under specified conditions)

Test Process

  1. Creating a Test Plan: It is determined which IP rating the product will be subjected to.
  2. Water Spray Test: The device is tested for durability in water spray scenarios.
  3. Water Immersion Test: The product is immersed in water at specified depths and durations and its durability is checked.
  4. Reporting and Certification: Test results are presented in a detailed report and an official IP rating is given after successful tests.

Why is it important?

      • Product Safety: Knowing how resistant the devices are to external factors ensures safe use.
      • Consumer Confidence: IP rating proves the reliability of products and gives confidence to consumers.
      • Legal Requirements: In many sectors, IP tested products have become mandatory for market entry.
