What is Dielectric Test?
Dielectric strength and dielectric strength tests are used to determine the durability of insulating barrier materials in electronic devices. The element’s dielectric strength and dielectric strength testing is a critical step in the product safety evaluation of electrical and electronic devices.
What is the Purpose of Dielectric Testing?
Dielectric tests apply highly alternating currents (AC) or direct currents (DC) to the insulating barrier and measure the response of the material. AC voltage is more commonly used in dielectric testing.
The purpose of the dielectric strength test is to reach the point of breakdown or failure. This happens when the material experiences a sudden change in resistance to the test voltage. The voltage level at which the barrier allows current to flow is the dielectric strength of the material.
In contrast, dielectric strength tests are used to measure how well the insulation can hold high voltage for a given period of time before the material fails.
Dielectric Strength Test Time
The test voltage is usually applied for 1 minute to force the insulation sufficiently. However, many standards allow testing time to be reduced to 1 second to accommodate large volume of production line testing. For reduced time tests, standards generally require the test voltage to be increased by 20% to ensure that 1 second is sufficient to adequately test the insulation.
